The Kansas Association of
Addiction Professionals
Until rather recently, the term “addiction” was
popularly accepted as alcoholism or uncontrolled
dependency on other drugs. Although a non-substance,
problem gambling, with symptoms paralleling that
of substance addiction, has joined alcohol and
drugs as treatable diseases. Today, professionals
in social welfare, juvenile justice, criminal justice,
physical and mental health care, and other disciplines
are acquiring the training to gain proficiency
in working with clients with addictions.
The Kansas Association of Addiction Professionals
(KAAP) in its structural composition mirrors this
expansion. This evolution began in the early 1970s
with the organization of alcoholism treatment counselors
in Kansas . Simultaneously, was the development
of counselors working with drug addicts. In Kansas
, the two elements came together in the early 1980s
with the merger of the Kansas Alcoholism Counselors
Association (KACA) with the Kansas Association
of Drug Abuse Counselors (KADAC) to form Kansas
Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Counselors Association
(KADACA). With the establishment of the credentialing
process, professional ethics and standards and
through association leadership, the counseling
profession became one of international recognition
and respect.
In March 2000, KADACA was reorganized under the
KAAP banner to become an expanded organization
representative of all professions in which addiction
is often a component in a client’s treatment.
From an original membership of less than 50 counselors
to more than 500 by the end of the 20th Century,
KAAP is expected to continue to grow, reflecting
the determination on the part of professionals
in many disciplines to wage a multi-front campaign
on the disease of addiction.
